Gaspar's Best Drug Induced Nutrient Depletion
What is drug-induced nutrient depletion?
Prescription medication can be extremely effective and helpful. However, prescription drugs by nature are destructive. When used appropriately, this can be very beneficial to your health. For example, taking an antibiotic when you have a cold will destroy the bad bacteria causing your illness. A cancer medication will help to destroy cancer cells. The list goes on and on.
Unfortunately, some medications are not destructive in a "targeted" way. In fact, though your medication may be helping your body in some ways, it can harm your body in other ways or prevent the absorption of key nutrients your body needs to function on a daily basis.
For example, that same antibiotic that will cure your cold and the bad bacteria in your system will also destroy the good bacteria in your stomach upon absorption. This often leads to indigestion and other stomach issues.
How can I combat drug-induced nutrient depletion?
In the case of the antibiotic, our pharmacists and many physicians recommend supplementing your antibiotic with a probiotic to replace the good bacteria in your stomach. A quality probiotic contains at least 1-2 Billion viable bacteria cells and multiple strains of bacteria. An excellent probiotic should be stomach acid resistant and contain a prebiotic (essentially food for the probiotic cells), which strengthens it.
Culturelle is a great probiotic and typically what doctors recommend. It's a great choice. However, our pharmacists believe that our probiotic is event stronger. We recommend our Gaspar's Best Probiotic Daily Support. It has 5 billion cells, 8 strains of bacteria, is stomach acid resistant, and contains a prebiotic blend to strengthen the probiotic.
This is just one example. There are a number of medications that deplete nutrients in your body or prevent your body from absorbing them. To combat this, you can try and focus your diet to take in more of that nutrient. However, if your medication is blocking this absorption, you may need to supplement your diet with a more absorbable form of that nutrient.
What other medicines will deplete nutrients in my body?
We've created a chart to help outline other potential drug-induced nutrient depletions. If you see a medication you are taking on this list, you may want to consider eating more foods that contain that nutrient or supplementation with the affiliated supplement.
